Abstract

Wellness plays a significant role in mental health and stability. Your wellness effect mental disorders such as: depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, just to name a few. Many people are learning more about their bodies and want an alternative to harsh medication. Prevention is a concern of many. Within the scope of the research I discuss ways to take care of your mental health before problems occur. Exercise and nutrition has profound effects on mental stability. While, junk food, stress, and lack of exercise has negative effects on a person’s mental health. Those suffering from mental disorders are at greater risk of mental instability. Among the mental disorders affected are: depression, anxiety, ADHD, and bipolar disorder. Previous research performed by the National Institute of Mental Health concludes that depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States for people aged 15 to 44 years and is the most common psychiatric condition worldwide, followed closely by generalized anxiety (Viejo, 2010). Through alternatives as aromatherapy, massage therapy, and social support we can control anxiety, depression and stress levels.

Nutrition

Vitamins and minerals make your mind & body perform to it’s full potential. Among these nutrients are omega-3 fatty acids, b-vitamins, iron, and zinc. Omega-3 fatty acid is found in oily fish with salmon having the highest amount of omega-3. Societies that consume large amounts of fish have fewer mental health disorders, while the diets that are rich in trans-fatty acids and saturated fat have more mental disorders among their societies. On the Japanese island of Okinawa, for example, people have a disproportionately low rate of mental disorders. Okinawans are noticeable fish eaters (Anonymous, 2008).
