Definition of work place stress:

Workplace stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job/ or other functions do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the employee.( L. Robinson 2012)

Stress is a part of everyday life; we all experience it to one degree or another. Although it is an unavoidable part of many activities at work and at home, stress becomes harmful when it reaches an intensity that impairs daily activities. Workplace stress can be very costly. It contributes to low productivity, occupational illness and injury, absenteeism, poor employee morale and high healthcare costs. A feeling of powerlessness is a universal cause of job stress. When you feel powerless, you're prey to depression's traveling companions, helplessness and hopelessness. You don't alter or avoid the situation because you feel nothing can be done.

1. Jobs that demand a lot from you, while giving you little or no control over how the job is performed; 2. Unsafe and/or uncomfortable work environments; 3.Lack of employee participation or input in organizational practices; and 4.little social support, poor supervision or poor relations with co-workers.
