Epistemology | Epistemology is the nature of knowledge (how we know what we know) based on facts that have been argued or on a particular theoretical framework (Becvar & Becvar. 2009; Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. 1978; Alpaslan, Du Plooy, Gelderblom, Van Eeden, Van Rensburg & Wigston, 2010). | One of the fundamental assumptions of the Individual Psychology theory of Alfred Alder based on the Western, Lockean tradition is that, an individual is implicitly and explicitly socialised to behave appropriately as a result of his or her interaction with the social environment (for example, family, school, etc.) (Becvar & Becvar, 2009; Meyer, Moore & Viljoen, 2008). According to Alfred’s theory the individual strives for superiority to compensate for feelings of inferiority as a result of his or her social interactions (Meyer et al, 2008). |

Theory | Theory is a framework of ideas or facts that provides an explanation of a particular phenomenon or event (Janeke & Kruger, 2011; Van Rensburg et al, 2010). | Examples of theories are the Social Cognitive theory, the Self-Actualisation theory, the Self-Concept theory, Existential theory, and the famous Psychoanalytical theory of Sigmund Freud (Meyer et al, 2008). |
