There are several genetic disorders people live with and can easily be passed onto their children through no fault of the parents. The recessive genetic disorder is a disease that is caused by disturbances in the genes or in chromosomes. Tay-Sachs disease refers to a disorder that is present in a single defective gene which comes from both parents. The defective copy of the gene is present in the parents’ body however the parents might not be affected by the disease itself. With Tay-Sachs disease the brain and nerve cells die prematurely which causes the breakdown of the body. Unfortunately with your child we were not able to tell in infants the children show no signs of Tay-Sachs disease until they reach past six months old. Although medical researchers are busy searching for ways to cure this unfortunate condition, there is currently no way to get rid of this disease I know this can be truly heartbreaking. Although there is no way to cure this condition, here at Duke University we still take steps to treat tour patients with Tay-Sachs disease. The reason we still do this is to ensure that the amount of pain that your child is experience is minimal. One of the biggest issues with this condition is that the lungs can become filled with mucus. When this happens, it makes it difficult for your child to breathe. Fortunately, we are able to take steps to minimize the amount of mucus that clogs the lungs. Another aspect of treating a patient with Tay-Sachs disease is to provide them with physical therapy. This is important because it makes it possible for them to continue moving around on their own. It can also significantly cut down on the amount of pain that they experience.
