Human Nutrition Plan

BIOS 237

This program excludes grains, dairy and beans and restricts potato-like products (potatoes, sweet potatoes etc., and never after 2:00pm). Grains are defined here as anything made from wheat, barley, corn, rice, oats, rye etc.  No sugar, sweets, or dried fruit and avoid oils/butter/dressings/mayo other than those made with canola, olive and flax (these are healthy mono and omega-three type, eat all you want). Occasional butter is OK.  Look for canola mayo.  Fish and/or fish-oil pills are a good idea, but no other supplements are necessary (other than vitamin D if you don't get regular sun). Nightshades (potato, tomato, peppers, eggplant) should be eliminated by anyone with auto-immune problems or a family history of auto-immune problems. They contain a poison called solanine that weakens the gut-barrier. Grains, dairy, legumes, capsicum (hot chili), NSAID's (aspirin, ibuprofen etc) and egg whites also have this effect, through varying mechanisms. A weakened intestinal barrier can allow gut bacteria and food particles into the blood stream and stimulate auto-immune/inflammatory reactions. Many health problems are now thought to have auto-immune/inflammatory components, including artery plaque formation, which results in heart diseases. I would advise anyone to eliminate these foods for six weeks and then try them out, one at a time, to see how they feel. Potatoes are extremely high glycemic, nightshade or not.
