Finding Nemo Thematic Unit

The Quest to Find Nemo

Social Studies – Locate the Great Barrier Reef and other coral reefs around the world. Locate and understand what makes each reef unique and be able to describe why.

Science – Read fact cards provided of each species. Writing activity about favorite sea creatures. Display stories to share with class.

Art – Students construct diorama of the Great Barrier Reef. Students use of materials provided. Students clean up work area.

Physical Education – Play tag based game based on the story of Finding Nemo. Take turns being different characters in game.

Math – Questions about geometric shapes. Students able to list attributes of geometric shapes.

Poetry – Students will listen to example poem. Students create own poem and drawing to accompany. Students share completed poem with class.

Drama – Students begin by reading book provided. Group students. Students write skit based on movie characters and the Great Barrier Reef knowledge learned. Students perform skit for class.

Music – Students read lyrics provided. Students listen to rhythm of song. Students perform song with traditional and non-traditional instruments with accurate rhythm and lyrics.

Reading – Students will independent read for 20 minutes. Reading logs to record new information learned. Grand conversation about knowledge learned.

Writing – Students select character writing prompt. Students spend 15 min a day writing about their prompt. Students draw a picture to accompany their writing. Students present final writing at end of unit.
