Describe the emerging cybersecurity issues and vulnerabilities presented in the “Emerging Cyber Threats 2012” report.
With the advancement in technology we are experiencing cyber-attacks of unprecedented sophistication and reach. Hackers have demonstrated they have the ability to compromise and control millions of computers that belong to governments, private enterprises and citizens. Unique security challenges have risen in terms of usability and scale due to mobile applications relying on browsers. The mobile internet is expected to surpass desktop internet usage by 2014. One of the many security challenges is the small screen size. A major vulnerability that can be exploited by existing and emerging threats was created with the development of less expensive mobile phones having some form of Web browser. There is difficulty solving mobile Web browser security flaws due to the device constraints and the strain between usability and security which has created special security consideration. Exploration of the significant differences between mobile browsers and traditional desktop browsers is required to fully understand the potential of emerging threats. “Many mobile device vulnerabilities originate from mobile applications.” Many security issues are present with downloadable apps. Attacks stem from malware and spyware which can be used for malicious purpose. And because mobile devices are constantly connected to the Internet, Web based threats have become a major problem. Included in the problem are phishing scams, email and text messages, and social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Mobile Internet users are also subject to browser exploits from a vulnerable Flash player, PDF reader, or image viewer....
