Book Review: Business for the Glory of God

In the book Business for the Glory of God: The Bible’s Teaching on the Moral Goodness of Business by author Dr. Wayne Grudem, he discusses several philosophies in which we could interact with our co-workers, employees and customers in a business environment. Dr. Grudem shows us how several business activities give us the opportunity to glorify God and follow the Bible as a reference to how we should relate our readings of scripture to everyday business life. There are eleven main points Dr. Grudem gives us a synopsis of business activities which include; Ownership, Productivity, Employment, Commercial transactions (buying and selling), Profit, Money, Inequality of possessions, Competition, Borrowing and lending, Attitudes of heart and effect on world poverty. Ultimately, Dr. Grudem wants to show us that these business activities are morally good and bring glory to God.

Grudem first wants us to consider two introductory points in his book. The first point is imitation of God and the second dealing with moral wrongdoing. Grudem tells us that imitating the attributes of God is a good way to glorify Him. God created us in his image so he can see His attributes in us. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (NIV) We are his representatives on earth and we should reflect his values thus imitating his character to reflect His goodness. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (NIV) Grudem’s second point of moral wrongdoing or sin explains that we should not lie or misrepresent Him in any way. Leviticus 6:1-5 speaks of many sins against our God that we should not commit, “The Lord said to Moses: If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord by deceiving a neighbor about something entrusted to them or left...
