Leaders Are Made Not Born

Leaders are made not born. Everyone has the potential to be a leader, even though some people fantasize about being a leader but in their mind it is a wishful thinking on their part because they are of the opinion that leaders are born to lead. Let me cut through the chase and say, leaders are mostly made not born. Dr. Pace, J. (2006). wrote: “Even born leaders have to learn and develop skills to allow them to lead effectively.” Researchers have come to the conclusion that leadership is about one-third born and two-thirds made.

Leadership is not something with which you are born, or you inherit, if it were; then great leaders will have children after them who are effective leaders. Why not? You may ask, because those who are born into great families do not have certain pedigree or possess certain traits that will automatically make then great leaders. Most great leaders that we know are rarely born with any legacy, nor are they necessarily from great families, they emerge as leaders on their own merit because they make a decision to be leaders on a cause that they believe in. According to article written by Sangeeth Varghese dated November 29th 2007, Research at the London School of Economics published their results showing that leaders were rarely born. Instead, they are the ones who are willing to make the decision to lead in situation when it is most expected of them.

Let’s look at the case of Henry Ford, the man that revolutionized industrial production, and had such influence over the 20th century economy. He was from a poor family. According to Sangeeth Varghese (2007) article his parents were poor immigrants from the west of England, where they were evicted from their land in Somerset they sojourner to America were they faced great difficulties, yet he “Ford” was able to overcome and become a great corporate leader. That is a testament to his willingness to succeed and become a great pioneer of industries.
