In a town in New York State is the location of the Baking Company. In an informal atmosphere, the business is run by two brothers and has fewer than 200 individuals whom are mainly blue color workers. The company only produces over 50 varieties of soft cookies. Its competitors, Keebler, Sunshine, and Nabisco have always created cookies with the water baked out called biscuit cookies. Since the soft cookies have no preservatives or additives, the cookies are high quality and have enabled the company gain itself into a strong market position (Stevenson, 2011).

According to the text, “batch processing is used when a moderate value of goods or services is desired and it can handle a moderate variety of products and services.” (Stevenson, 2011, p. 237) Batch system examples are: bakeries that make cookies, cakes, and breads in batches; airlines that carry people in batches; and movies theaters that show movies to batches of people (Stevenson, 2011). This is the production process of the Bakery Company. Once the management team receives the orders from its distributors, a schedule is designed to illustrate which cookies are to be produced. The schedule is then dispersed to the individual that is in charge of mixing so that the necessary ingredients can be obtained for each type of cookie. The ingredients that are needed are then entered into the computer. This determines the amount of each ingredient is needed according to the number of cookies ordered. Once the quantity of ingredients is determined, the information is relayed to the storage silos located outside the plants. These storage silos hold the flour, cake flour, and sugar necessary to make the cookies. These ingredients are then transported automatically to the enormous mixing machines are combined with the flavors, eggs, and water.
