Describe the aims of MDG and assess the progress that has been made towards achieving them

Millennium Development Goals are the liabilities that mankind should fulfill to face the challenges of 21st century. They consist of 8 points. The first target is to fight with poverty and undernutrition. Submitters declare to halve the number of people who suffer from hunger and whose income is less than 1$ a day. Next two targets are providing every man with primary education and reducing gender inequalities. Boys and girls will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling and gender disparities eliminated in every level of education. The respective three aims are connected with health services: Reduce the under-five mortality rate, decrease by 75% maternal mortality, halve the spread of HIV/AIDS and malaria and achieve universal access to treatment. Ensuring environmental sustainability means reducing biodiversity loss, halving the number of people with no access to clean water and basic sanitation. The details of last goal – promoting global partnership – are: deal with debt problems of LEDCs, creating open, non-discriminatory, predictable financial system, providing LEDCs with essential medicines and technologies. All submitters declared to fulfill the goals by 2015.

The progress differs significantly depending on the region of the world. Unfortunately, not all the goals will be achieved entirely by the deadline. Africa has made significant progress in providing primary education (Many countries are reaching literacy rate of 90%) and decreasing gender inequalities (high representation of women in parliament). HIV/AIDS is on the decline due to behavioral changes and better access to antiretroviral therapy. Malaria mortality decreased by more than a third. There is improved water supply, reduced emission of ozone depleting substances. Some parts of Africa are to be reforested.
