Background Report
Sport Chek is now Canada’s biggest national retailer of sporting goods, footwear and apparel, with a great number of stores across the country. Its parent company is the Forzani Group which also operates many other sports retail stores with different brands.
In 2011, Canadian Tire bought Forzani for $771 million, and has since embarked on a large scale brand restructuring. (Sport Chek, 2013)
Investigation Form
First, I searched some information of Sport Chek and got background data. Then according to the requirements of the assignment, I prepared a couple of questions and interviewed a supervisor of Sport Chek by e-mail. Finally, I combined all materials I had with my personal opinions and finished this case study.
1. Transportation Issues & Non-issues
Sport Chek has only two warehouses in whole Canada to distribute products. There are two main companies that Sport Chek uses for its logistics, Vitran and Purolator. Vitran, a leading regional and national LTL service provider, delivers its big shipments, while Purolator, integrated freight and parcel solutions provider, delivers its smaller items. (Purolator, 2013) (Vitran, 2013) And Sport Chek chooses these two companies because they offer satisfying rates. The reason why they are so reasonably priced is because they must stay competitive in order to keep their big client happy.
2. Location, labor, historic, natural & other resources, agreements, treaties, etc.
One of the ways Sport Chek chooses the locations for its stores is by asking every customer for their postal code. This allows them to find out which area customers are coming from and how far they are coming to the shop. Then they make informed decisions on where their next location will be put up.
