Rhetorical Modes Matrix

Rhetorical modes are methods for effectively communicating through language and writing. Complete the following chart to identify the purpose and structure of the various rhetorical modes used in academic writing. Provide at least 2 tips for writing each type of rhetorical device.

Narration | The purpose of a narrations is to tell stories | The chronological method would be best. | Focus in on details that will draw in your reader.Use all of the 5 senses to really grab the reader. |

Illustration | Illustration in writing would be used to clearly demonstrate and support a point through use of evidence. | For an illustration essay you would want to go with order of importance. Arrange your points in order of significance. | Vary the phrases of illustration you use. Variety in word use will keep readers engaged. |

Description | Typically used to describe a person, place, or an object. | Spatial order would be best for a description essay. You would be arranging the ideas in order of their physical characteristics or appearance. | Focus on sight and sound to give a good mental picture to the reader.Avoid descriptive words like good, nice, and terrific. They can easily mean different things to different people. |

Classification | Classification is used to describe something in a lot of detail. | A classification essay should be organized by its sub categories. | Know your subject very well.Break your topic down at least 3 ways to avoid over simplifying it. |

Processanalysis | A process analysis is to describe how something works or how to do something. | The chronological method would be best. | Choose a subject you know well enough to give specific instructions...
