On any given day of the week while watching your local news, Sunday football, your favorite night time drama or afternoon talk show you are nearly 100% likely to see a snappy, whimsical and very familiar commercial. The colors are bright, the music is catchy, the visual interest is clear and the overall message is concise; shopping here is fun, hip and reasonably priced. Then you see the “bulls – eye” and know, it has to be Target.

Originally founded in 1902 as Goodfellow’s Dry Goods Group and redefined throughout the years as Dayton Dry Goods, Dayton – Hudson and finally in 2000 as Target Corporation, (Wikipedia.org), Target has become a retail dynasty. With over 1,700 stores in forty-nine states and more than 351,000 employees (Target.com), Target has gone from a small family business to a retail conglomerate that has created a brand and a company like no other in its industry. Target’s mission is to “make Target the preferred shopping destination for guests by delivering outstanding values, continuous innovation and an exceptional guest experience by consistently fulfilling the “Expect More, Pay Less” brand promise” (Target.com). It is not surprising that the “Expect More, Pay Less” mantra has been ingrained in most American’s brains. Even the famous “bulls – eye” trademark which was first introduced in 1962 and revamped in 1968 is said to have resembled a marksman’s goal to hit the center bulls – eye, (Target.com) Target is one of the most recognizable retailer brand in the world (Rowley). In addition to Target’s red and white bulls-eye logo, in 1999, Target brilliantly introduced Bullseye, the Dog which has appeared in countless advertisements and won over television viewers all of the country.
