OSI Model And How It Relates To A Network

This paper serves as an introduction to OSI Model. To build a home network you do not need to understand the OSI Model, however in order to troubleshoot the network it will be helpful to have a basic understanding of how the network works. Based on the seven layers of the OSI Model, it defines a networking framework for implementing protocols. Each layer functions independently, provides services above it and receives services below it.

The International Standards Organization (ISO) created the OSI model. It helps us to understand how network component and network protocol behave and work together. Today to describe the various networking issues the OSI model is used throughout the network, telecom industries and internet. It is also used in training environment as a point of reference to learn how various technologies interact, how each protocol communicate with other protocols and what functions they perform. The communication process of the OSI model defines into 7 layers. Each layer can be update without affecting the other layer and can be implemented independently. The layers 3 to 1deals with communication between network devices while the layers 7 to 4 deals between the data sources and destination. The upper layers are layers 7, 6, and 5 and deals with the application issues. The lower layers are layers 4, 3, 2, and 1 and handle the transport issues.

The OSI model main feature is the interface between layers and how each layer interacts with each other. A protocol implements the OSI layers function and governs how computers exchange information over the network. The protocols are Network protocols, WAN protocols, LAN protocols, and Routing protocols. The LAN protocols operate at the data link and physical layers and the WAN protocols operate at layers 1, 2, and 3. The Routing protocols exchange information between routers.
