Michael is a 40-year-old airline pilot who has recently begun to experience chest pains. The chest pains began when Michael signed his final divorce papers, ending his 15-year marriage. He fought for joint custody of his two children, ages 12 and 10, but although he wants to be with them more frequently, he only sees them every two weeks. This schedule is, in great part, a result of his employer's announcement that budget constraints would result in layoffs. Michael worries that without his job he will be unable to support his children and lose the new townhouse that he purchased. Michael's chest pains are becoming more frequent and he fears that he may be dying.
1. What are the causes of stress in Michael or Jennifer's life? How is stress affecting Michael's or Jennifer's health?
Michael’s stress is chronic and is shown in his daily life. He experiences issues over possibly losing his job in the near future and also issues about the loss of his marriage. He also experiences stress over not getting to spend adequate time with his children since his divorce. He now feels alone and depressed which exacerbates the issues with which he is dealing. The pressures he feels around time and money issues are a significant stressor for him. He feels conflict between his work and personal lives. He is facing instability in all aspects of his life. The financial pressure and emotional pressure are combined since they affect both his living situation and his ability to be with his children. Each of these stressors exerts extreme, ongoing, daily pressure on this man’s overall health and well being. He is demonstrating symptoms of depression and anxiety as a result of his stress. He needs to find resolution now by learning and applying positive coping skills so that he can maintain a high level of functioning. This...
