USAA’s Human Resource Program Audit

Company Profile: United Service Automobile Association (USAA) – San Antonio, TX facility.

USAA was created in 1922 by 25 military officers that were unable to secure auto insurance decided to self-insure each other’s vehicles. USAA services include property, casualty, and life insurance, banking, investing, and financial planning to more than 8.8 million U.S. military members, veterans and their families. USAA has about 23,400 employees throughout their six U.S locations and two overseas locations in Germany and London (“100 Best”). USAA is a $19 billion company growing at the rate of 8% annually and their employee benefits programs account for more than $400 million yearly (King). Their commitment to their employees has ranked them Computer World and G.I. Jobs’ magazine number one company to work for 2012 and 20th in Fortune “100 Best Companies to Work for 2012”.

Focus: Work-life Programs

Observations:

The majority of their employees have families with children making it essential to offer child-care solutions. On-site child development centers offered eliminates excess out-of-pocket expense for employees. Also, discounts and tuition aid is offered for off-site childcare as well. They have also expanded domestic partnership benefit for same-sex couples, to cover significant others and their children for all benefits offered at the company.
