Army Crew Case Study Harvard

Executive Summary:

Colonel Stas Preczewski, coach of Army Crew team for the United States Academy at West Point, is undergoing the pressure of analyzing the performance of the team Varsity (V) crew boat team which has undergone the lost of match against Junior Varsity (JV) crew boat team which is a junior team. Varsity team which consist of top eight rowers, have lost severely against the Junior Varsity which has least eight performers. There is National Championship race, just one week to spare and coach has to analyze how to improve the the reason of lost of varsity and how can he bring back the strength of the team.

Problem Analysis:

1. Team Varsity was having lack of team work that too when all 8 played together individually and in other groups they easily defeated JV thus there was lack of coordination among the 8.

2. Team V lacked leader in their team although technically everyone was excellent however there was no leadership quality in anyone of them and more were team disrupter rather than team builder.

3. They were more of complaining each other ,they were not working towards solving the issue

4. There are three options available for coach 1.either replace varsity team with JV team 2. Shift some players of JV team to Varsity team 3) Intervene to improve V boat’s performance.

Alternative Analysis/Recommendations:

1. Only four days to go to championship and it is very tough to get team on the track which is highly demotivated, no team spirit no winning attitude thus coach has to be bit harsh to them to make them understand that alone they are nothing no matter how better each of them is ,they are only best if they work together . Option is he should declare that JV representing for the US academy of West Point. JV is highly motivated have team spirit and its not possible for coach to bring the Varsity team at same mindset level
