Many individuals would say that the best place to live is in the United States. The reasoning behind this is the fact that in the United States there is more liberty for entrepreneurship, and for people to achieve the “American Dream.” However, people must understand that entrepreneurship and owning your own business isn’t as easy as it may sound, it takes a lot of work and strategic planning. In order to own your own business aside from strategic planning management must understand what work will be done first, as well as what direction the organization will take. That is where project management comes into play, project management helps organizations implement the plans that they want as well as attaining the goals that are trying to be achieved. The purpose of this paper will be to discuss the importance, as well as the perception of project management. It will also discuss information on the key elements which make project management an essential part of any project. We will answer three questions which are:

• What is a project?

• What are the Basic phases of the project lifecycle and their purposes?

• Why is it important for organizations to use project management to accomplish tasks?

What is a project?

According to Businessdictionary.com (2013) “A project is a planned set of interrelated tasks to be executed over a fixed period and within cost and other limitations, which is designed to achieve an aim.” Projects can range in timeframes, they can either be short-term (meaning a few days, weeks, or months), or long-term (meaning many months or even years).
