Case 17- The Passive Principal
Problem Framing Assignment
The Problem:
Upon considerable self-reflection, I can’t deny that implementing SBM at the Elm Street Elementary School has proven to be more than I can handle. My self-reflection has led me to determine that my poor leadership skills are the main issue in this case.
The Current State of the School:
Notwithstanding, at the present time the Elm Street Elementary School is failing at implementing SBM. The school council is in disarray and has made no strides. Amy Raddison and Tim Paxton are team players ready and willing to work. Nonetheless, their efforts are fruitless due to the social conflict between the Ms. Bales and Mr. Teel and their respective factions. I am the leader of this school and yet I am satisfied with my role as just one more member of the council. The one member that does not want to put a ripple in the water. Finally, Barbara Whitlow the president of the Parent and Teacher Association, a parent representative and council chair is ready to quit and notify the superintendent of what is going on in the school.
The School’s Desired State:
The Elm Street Elementary School successfully implemented SBM in the school. The school council comprised of 11 members (6 teachers, 3 parents, one support staff and the school principal) worked cohesively. Although it was understood that the principal is an equal member of the school council, his leadership skills allowed him to engage the other council members to come up with a vision that encompasses the needs of the school. The school council worked on a plan to bring realize their school vision. The school council’s energy and hard work allowed for the recruiting other school members (teachers, staff etc.) to join one of the teams form. The success of the implementation of the SBM in the Elm Street Elementary School is well known throughout the school district. The school has the support of the parents.
