External/Internal Factors that Affect FedEx

Introduction

There are a number of factors that contribute to the success of a company. An example of a very successful global company is FedEx Corp. The company is just over 10 years old, and began as a single entity that had a goal of building on its success of providing express delivery by acquiring different but related companies (FedEx, 2009). This was a great and large goal, and could only come about with some careful and strategic planning. Likewise, the right team of management was required to handle the job of creating the path as well as directing the company down this path to reach its goals. In order to do that, management must function in an effective way with the following: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.

Four Functions of Management for FedEx

FedEx is an international company that has not only expanded geographically across the world but expanded their services and products they offer. Since FedEx is such a large company they have many different internal and external factors that may impact their four functions of management.

External factors that may impact the four functions of management may include cultures, ethics, competition and the economy. Since FedEx does business globally they must take into consideration the culture of each country in which they do business. For instance in some countries it may be unheard of for a man to conduct business with a woman, therefore, FedEx must respect their rules. FedEx has their own set company ethics that may or may not allow them to conduct business with companies that partake in child labor or sweat shops. FedEx’s competition spans across many companies and industries all across the world because they are so versatile.
