Course Overview

This course will provide students with an overview of how management, psychology, marketing, and related fields have approached the topics of leadership, influence, and power. This course will address the antecedents of leadership (e.g., How do specific leaders emerge? What are the qualities of good leaders?), and the act of leadership (e.g., How do leaders influence their followers? What limitations are inherent to leadership positions?). Specific topics covered include leadership styles, persuasion, social influence, evolutionary perspectives, motivating others, and mediating conflict. This will be a discussion-heavy and reading-intensive course; all students will be responsible for leading one discussion over the course of the term.

Readings

All readings are required, and all files are accessible via web searches or PsychInfo on the UW library electronic resources website. For your convenience, I have also uploaded all of the additional readings to Waterloo LEARN.
