Paragraph 1

For a long time now I have known that I wanted to pursue a career as a nurse because of the neglect and mistreatment I witnessed my grandmother endure throughout her time in a nursing home. As my grandmother progressed in age she became very ill and frequent emergency room visits soon escalated into a tracheostomy (putting a breathing tube through a hole in the throat) and a temporary admission into a nursing home. At the time of her admission I was currently a freshman in high school, and after school each day I would travel to the nursing home to spend the remainder of my day there with my grandmother. Many times when I would arrive to the nursing home I would find my grandmother in tears, in pain, soiled, un-bathed, and hungry. I often took on the role of the nurses by bathing my grandmother, feeding her, changing her pampers and overall making sure she was as comfortable and cared for as possible. Due to the neglect of the nurses at the nursing home, it was not long until my grandmother developed a large and very painful pressure ulcer (injuries to skin and underlying tissues that result from prolonged pressure on the skin). I was more than relieved the day that she was released from the nursing home and allowed back home, where she would be well taken care of. Though the joy and excitement of being able to remove her from the nursing home was great, I still couldn’t help but imagine what it must be like for the other elderly and ill patients who would stay behind at the nursing home without any family of friends to take care of them when the nurses did not meet their obligations and responsibilities. I told myself that day, that though the overall issue of neglect and mistreatment in nursing homes was a problem way bigger than myself, that I served a God bigger than any issue that this world brought fourth and that with God’s help I would pursue a career in nursing so that I can do my part in preventing the neglect, pain and mistreatment that my...
