Physiologic changes that occur during the aging process

In older adulthood our “body systems begin to slow and degenerate” (Pearson, 562). The functions and activities of our organs and our body need special attention to care in order to maintain optimal health. “Some decreases in muscle mass, bone mass, and muscle strength is due to low physical activity” (Pearson, 562), and therefore, we can help contribute to our physiologic health in later adulthood by remaining active and maintaining nutritional health. However, this does not mean that we can reverse aging, only slow it down. “The physiologic changes that occur with aging include sensory declines; an impaired ability to chew, swallow, and absorb and metabolize various nutrients; a loss of muscle mass and lean tissue; increased fat mass; and decreased bone density” (Pearson, 564).

In order to prevent and intervene with these physiological changes that affect nutrition in older adults, an appropriate diet that meets older adulthood RDI for specific nutrients, as well as an active lifestyle incorporating exercise into the daily routine is necessary. “Older people often have reduced appetite and energy expenditure, which, coupled with a decline in biological and physiological functions such as reduced lean body mass, changes in cytokine and hormonal level, and changes in fluid electrolyte regulation, delay gastric emptying and diminish senses of smell and taste”(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2920201). Maintaining dental health benefits older adults in better nutrition. Taking dietary supplements to maintain proper nutrition as well as eating a nutrient rich diet are very important to keeping our body in good shape. Regular weight bearing activities improve and maintain bone health. Yoga is a popular exercise that promotes muscle health and one that I intend to incorporate more into my lifestyle. Calorie Restriction has shown many benefits in extending life in many animals including humans. It...
