Title: Premier Book Centre (A)

Background

Premier Book Centre (PBC) is the leading sales books distributor competing located in the Philippines. The Broad topic Encyclopedia selling for $36,000 a set was the largest sales volume, which made up of 70% of sales of PBC. The rest were science-based encyclopedia, almanacs, yearbooks, and dictionaries.

The Industry

There were 15 others distributors in the Philippines. When economy would be bad, it would affect the book market. If the price of book that was established was quite high, then sales would be low. In the book distribution industry, the companies would be allocated specific distribution rights. A book distributor company would be a wholesaler or warehouse of publisher’s title. Companies would sell the books directly to the customers. Books Distributor Company would own a range list of publications rights and would sell the range of publication to bookstores. Bookstores at times prefer to buy from a book distributor due to the various ranges of publications rather than have individual account with a publisher.

Recently, a new international book about world famous cartoon characters would be released in January. Based on survey of 100 respondents, 71% interested on the book, 63% will consider if price is reduced and 24% interested if there were discount of 15% to 19%.

The Operations

The operations of PBC could be divided into obtaining the rights of publications, setting the price as well as sales. In PBC, the teams were divided into 4 team taking care of different region. The first group was lead by Leni with a focus on Metro Manila area (exclude Makati). The second team was Mario who was the leader managing Makati and the rest of Luzon. Rudy oversaw a team located in Visayas and Mindanao. Last but not least, Sammy was in charge of the part time team that focused of Metro Manila area. The first three group consisted of full timers while the last group had a part time team.
