There are a lot of concerns when securing a court room during a case. Things like securing the defendant, not just in the courtroom, but in the jail and anywhere in between. Securing the jury, from external sources and occasionally each other, and keeping everyone involved even slightly with a trial secure and safe from internal or external threats. All of these factors, plus many more work against those unsung agents who attempt to give everyone a fair trial.

After the arrest but before the trial, a suspect may require protection. The location of the defendant determines what type of protection is available. In the case of a defendant housed in a jail, the first step is to assess and counter any existing and possible future threats, both internal and external.

External threats can be from anywhere, including other prisoners [ (CNN, 2010) ]. Pedophiles and Rapist are often abused and beaten, sometimes to death [ (JAMES, 2003) ]. If the accused is particularly agitating towards other inmates and does not mind his manners in prison, he may fine his stay rough and possibly deadly. For the most part, an inmate will get back what he gives out. If an inmate is considerate, respectful, and tolerant of other inmates, they for the most part, will be considerate, respectful, and tolerant of him. Prison inmates are intolerant of other inmate’s lack of respect, impertinence, and rudeness. Prison has its own set of complex rules and codes of conduct. Just holding eye contact for a second too long or glancing round when the suspect hears a cry can earn them a serious beating (Frank, 2008). Once they have inadvertently breached one of prison's unwritten rules, they will be viewed with suspicion by the other inmates and the chances of becoming the victim of further violence will be greatly increased.
