“Organizational socialization is the process by which employees learn about and adapt to new jobs, rules, and the culture of the workplace” (Ballard & Blessing, n.a., p. 240). If the socialization process is managed properly, the impact on job satisfaction is positive. Starting a new job and taking-on new duties is stressful and may lead to dissatisfaction with the new job. Information provided during the socialization process should help with the feelings of uncertainty while mastering their new duties, and interpersonal relationships. Organizational socialization provides the support that newcomers need to be productive.

There are several phases of the socialization process that the newcomer must master before job satisfaction is apparent. The first phase is the understanding of the expectations, responsibilities, and goals of the organization. The second phase the newcomer understands what is required from them to perform the job duties. It is in the third phase which job satisfaction becomes apparent. If the socialization process has been managed properly, the newcomer will exhibit motivation, involvement, and productivity. Proper socialization causes the employees to stay committed to performance and to the organization’s values. Once the newcomer has reached a point where he or she is comfortable with their new role, they will begin to contribute positively to the ultimate goals of the organization.

On the alternative, if the socialization process was not properly managed, this could lead to the lack of motivation, high employee turnover, low productivity, and no involvement with the organization by the employees. The organization will not be as successful, as organizational socialization is one of the most important elements of success.
