Diversity Worksheet

Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued? Diversity is a variety of differences, whether associated with race, heritage, customs, capabilities or appearances. It is valued because if provides options and gives different views, standpoints, and insight.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? Ethnocentrism is an individual’s belief that one’s own culture is better than another’s. It can lead a group to thinking they are self-righteous and better than another. Ethnocentrism can be detrimental when it divides or is used to make a determination based upon another’s belief instead of facts.

3. Define emigration and immigration. Emigration is to leave one’s country and live elsewhere. Immigration is to enter and become established in said country.

4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified? Groups are identified by race (obvious physical differences), ethnicity (set apart due to origin and culture), religion (set apart by choice of worship), and gender (physical characteristics).

5. Why do people label and group other people? As a superiority, classification, and in some cases ignorance. (Not knowing a truth, only a speculation)

6. Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain. A shared belief, value, or way of life. Culture is not limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds because culture span’s more than just race and ethnic background. Saying it is limited is like saying possibilities are limited. There are some cultures that aren’t racial or ethnic based.
