Introduction

The following case study describes current issues facing Gene One. Senior Leadership recently made a presentation to the board outlining the need to make an IPO within 36 months to raise capital to expand the business in the area of crop genetic research. The board approved the plan and senior management has to implement the plan. Leadership has many issues to address in order to be successful in making an IPO. Included is a description of the situation with issues and opportunities for Gene One. The next part describes the major stakeholders including their perspectives and possible ethical dilemmas. Finally listed are the end-state goals for Gene One, their end-state vision and Gap Analysis.

Step One: Describe the Situation

Issue and Opportunity identification

Gene One has the opportunity to be a global leader in the area of crop research. In 8 years, they have grown to become a $400 million company. The groundbreaking gene technology has helped farmers who no longer have to spray crops with pesticides. An issue presented to Gene One is the need to grow by making an IPO to raise capital to expand. Additional funds are required to expand the business by developing new technology breakthroughs and six new and innovative products based on current technology. To develop new products an IPO will raise a substantial amount of cash to conduct research. The goal is to expand sales 40% each year for three year. This figure is very aggressive and can only be obtainable after new technologies or products are developed.

An issue to Gene One is several employees and managers are not on board for making an IPO. Gene One also has the opportunity to transforms its leadership style and culture to bring its management team and employees to value the positive aspects for being a public traded company.
