Assignment 2: The Value of Digital Privacy in an Information Technology Age

ABSTRACT

This paper will list some technologies opens the door to private information to regular individuals. Having in mind the advantages and disadvantages of this matter it is important to be aware and to know what measures can citizens take to keep their information inaccessible and private to anybody and everybody they decide. This paper will also have a discussion about the federal law that grants the federal government the legal right to make private information on U.S. citizens available to the public. Finally, it will determine if the “electronic privacy laws” are effective and capable of preventing people from accessing anybody’s “private information.”

A global survey found that 88% of people are worried about who has access to their data; over 80% expect governments to regulate privacy and impose penalties on companies that do not use data responsibly. ("The challenges of," 2012)

In this new technology age it seems like we have the world’s information at the tip of our fingers, as amazing as it sound the truth is that we do. Internet has become “the way” we do research. Many people including the new generations are not even aware of the old methods of research and now days most anything is found online. Internet and more specifically search engines have made this demand their business and have reached unimaginable capabilities of information of all sorts. Including personal and private, which search engines very easily can provide information such as phone numbers, pictures, addresses etc. Information that it is means to be used for networking and marketing purposes, can easily be a risk and misused for the wrong purposes.
