“Scheduling and Project Management (PERT and CRM)”

1. Identify the critical path and its activities for Rockfest. How long does the project take (what is the duration time)?

The critical path is A-D-E-F-G-O

A Finalize and building contracts. Activity time 7 Early start 0 Early finish 7 Late start 0 Late Finish 7 Slack 0

D Design promotional Web site. Activity Time 5 Early Start 10 Early Finish 15 Late Start 10 Late Finish 15 Slack 0

E Set TV deal. Activity time 6 Early start 15 Early finish 21 Late start 15 Late Finish 21 Slack 0

F Hire director. Activity time 4 Early start 21 Early finish 25 Late start 21 Late Finish 25 Slack 0

G Plan for TV camera placement. Activity time 2 Early Start 25 Early finish 27 Late start 25 Late Finish 27 Slack 0

O Passes and stage credentials. Activity time 7 Early Start 27 Early finish 34 Late start 27 Late Finish 34 Slack 0

The project completion time is 34 weeks.

2. How would you crash the project (which activities would you crash) to keep the project on schedule and achieve the original duration, if Activity B actually takes 5 weeks instead of the planned 3 weeks? (Explain your logic)?

The activities I would crash to keep the project on schedule are A-P-Y.

A Finalize and building contracts.

P Travel accommodations for staff

Y Secure merchandise deals

The reason would be less time for project completion. Right now the project plane would take 29 weeks to complete. Crashing these 3 activities would reduce to the completion time to 18 weeks therefore allowing extra time in other activities to be completed and allow for any delays.

3. Identify some major challenges a project manager faces in events such as this one.

Some major challenges a project manager faces would be planning systematically all aspects of the project, and solicit active involvement from all functional areas involved, in order to obtain and maintain a realistic plan that satisfies their commitment.
