Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility not only means setting goals to achieve success, it means having self worth and the initiative to better one’s self. We must be accountable for our own actions and our own success. Success is based on the effort that you give toward achieving your goals. If you don’t set goals in life, then you cannot measure your success. Morality and accountability are key factors that can keep you true to yourself. Having a responsible work ethic will also help you to achieve your goals. For example, college, you do not have to be the smartest individual in the class to succeed, but if you put the work in and give it a good honest effort, the results will show.
As noted by Karns & Parker (2007), “We must assure that our behavior not only has a
purpose, but an expected outcome.” (p. 13). Fair Play tells us that if we work together and
produce a common outline, that we can make a difference in student’s lives and education. We
have to lead by example and take responsibility for our actions, for what we do can affect the
way others learn and process information. (Karns & Parker, 2007).
The author’s have firsthand knowledge and experience in the field for which they are
writing about. They have actual statistics to support their claims. They have expanded on a set of
guidelines that have been developed for the mentor’s and student’s academic and personal
achievement. Fair Play uses the R’s, which are rules, responsibility, respect, rigor, relevance,
and relationships as tools to demonstrate the foundation for success. (Karns & Parker, 2007).
When you have experience with a subject, you tend to work toward a solution by doing things that you have tested and that you know works. When we can find proven studies to support our claims, I think that we have to believe in the numbers. If a sports article...
