"In every life, there are barriers that hinder the development of belonging"

Evaluate the barriers to belonging in "Romulus, my Father" and a least one found text.

In life, everyone has their own personal journey to find their place in the world where they are content. However, this path has many personal obstacles to face in order to achieve the self-contentment they seek. In two separate texts, the memoirs, "Romulus, My Father" and the collection of stories, "Angels in the ER", this journey takes very different paths, and yet they both reach this major goal in life.

In 'Romulus, My Father', it is written from the perspective of the titular characters' son, Raimond. His constant usage of the phrase "My Father", makes evident a strong connection between the two, allowing us to understand the great respect that raimond has for his father.

This respect is demonstrated frequently, especially concerning the physical skill that Romulus possesses. The quote, "From an early age he worked hard" (Chapter 1 page 2) we understand that the idea of hard work is a constant in the life of Romulus, and we also understand that he values hard-working people.

His values become a major focus, indicating the importance that Romulus held them in. His strong belief of the 'wrongness' of lying, is felt throughout the text, especially in the quote, "You must not lie. This is worse than any damage you might do" (Chapter 4 Page 49). It is throughout the entirety of the text, that we are fully able to understand just how important his integrity was, and how this firm belief in the integrity of others shaped his feelings of self worth.

In the collection of stories, "Angels in the ER", we are shown the daily life of an ER doctor, a profession that is extremely trying on even the strongest of people.
