Intro; ww1 different to other wars - advancement in weapons - machine guns, tanks. New tactics – trench warfare, War was all over world, heaps of nations involved. Previous wars – people volunteered, all fighting done at the frontline. WW1 – long range artilleries and planes focused on civilians.

How it started – MAIN, balance of power and territorial disputes, Balkan wars. Fighting between allied powers and central powers. Trigger event.

How poets saw the war- Brooks- honour to fight and die for country. Owen- was terrible and pointless, throwing life away. Bogle- sad, many deaths.

Rupert Brooke – English poet/ soldier. Served in Royal naval division. Only action in defence of Antwarp. Died in Skyros. ‘The soldier’ what is says about war? Quote – “ if i should die, think only this of me : That there is some corner of a foreign land that is forever England. “ Why he wrote it?

Wilfred Owen – Born 18 March 1893 in UK, religious, moved to France in 1913. Enlisted in Artist Rifles, only had 4 months of war experience. Thought war – horrible, pointless, not honourable to die, just stupid. Quote- “what passing bells for these who die as cattle? Only the monstrous anger of the guns.” Thought there was no dignity or respect who die, no celebration. Quote- “No mockeries now for them, no prayers nor bells : nor any voice of mourning save the choirs.” Gains from war? Nothing, dead men, despair.

Eric Bogle- Born in Scotland, moved to Australia, songwriter. Writes about deceased soldier – William McBride. Thinks war is; sad, all in vain. Quote- “For the sorrow, the suffering, the glory , the pain. The killing and dying were all done in vain.”...
