Sound Effects and Editing
The types of sound filmmakers use falls into 4 categories:
VOCAL
ENVIRONMENTAL
MUSIC
SILENCE
Every film has a soundcrews consisting of a supervising editor and sound editors who work under him/her and they all have a specialty in sound, whether its:
Sound Effects
Mixing
Rerecording Mixers etc
Sound editing usually takes longer than the actual time it took to do the film because there is so much that has to be done as far as sound effects, layering sound like traffic, or voices in background. These effects are typically done in post production.
Once the sound FX are recorded or captured, they are usually loaded into a computer integrated with a non-linear editing system. This allows a sound editor or sound designer to heavily manipulate a sound to meet his or her needs. They can jump to a certain point in the sound, and adjust pitch, the timing of the sound.
Sound Fx are not just used in movies, but in commercials, music videos, TV sitcoms, even in songs we listen to.
Sound effects are all sounds that are manufactured, meaning they are artificial. So when you see/hear a gun fire off in a movie, its not actually firing. Its loaded with blanks, and the actual sound is later added in post production, example, some films may record a toy cap gun firing, and then amplify the sound to give it the effect to draw us in.
Sound Fx is typically used to give a dramatic effect when visuals isn’t enough.
