Purpose

To find the percentage of offspring by cross breeding plants of different characteristics and observing how different traits are passed down to the offspring

Introduction

Gregor Mendel discovered the basic ideas of heredity through experiment conducted in his garden. Mendel conduct an experiments on plants hybrids that at the time it was known and accepted, that these plants return its original form and could not create new forms. Through his work Mendel found new ideas such as laws of segregation that shows there are dominant and recessive traits pass on casually from parent to offspring. Another idea was the law of independent assortment that traits were passed on freely of other traits from parent to offspring. Through the cross breeding of common pea plants over many generations Mendel discovered that certain traits show up in offspring from generation to generation without any blending of parent characteristic. (Mendel’s Genetics, n.d) Heredity in biology is the passing on of characteristic from one generation to the next. Every living organism inherits half its genetic traits from its mother and half from its father. A genotype is the actual set of genes that an organism has. A phenotype is a characteristic of an organism, like eye color, hair color, and nose, or biochemical traits, like cholesterol and blood type. In this paper we will perform Mendel experiments and observe the outcome of traits offspring’s receive from their parents for two generation.

Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome

The traits of offspring are the blend of the traits from their parents

Methods

In order to conduct the experiment materials that would be use are seeds of the designated phenotypes, a seed collecting pan, Styrofoam quads, florescent light, fertilizer pellets, water tray, labels and wicks. Begin by adding plotting soil to each cell of the quad until full, press down on soil with fingertip to make a depression, then add two seeds to each cell of the quad and...
