1. (3) Identify the types of likely conflicts during the project buildup, main program, and phase out stages.

Project buildup: this is the stage where a project is to be moved from general ideas to well detailed plans. Therefore, conflicts happen mostly over prioritizing, scheduling, administrative procedures, etc. As time goes on, conflicts over technical issues will raise as well because PM’s are seeking resources in functional departments.

Main program: conflicts mostly happen in scheduling and technical trouble shooting. As projects become more complex, the more difficult to keep track and on schedule with every department. The slack of R&D department may totally ruined PM’s original time frame and causing disastrous delay in the project. In addition to the scheduling issue, more systems will be involved in projects as projects get bigger or more complex; any change or malfunction in system could cause delays & conflicts as well.

Phase out: scheduling is still the main source of conflicts, and personality conflicts are following that. PM’s need to squeeze and catch up schedules for whatever schedules that have been delayed during the stage of main program, so the team is under extreme pressure to try to complete projects on time and as senior managements or clients demanded. The personality conflicts are then occurred due to stress to complete projects on time.

The main requirements are: PM must allow conflicts to be settled without irreparable harm to the projects’ objectives, PM must allow honesty between the negotiators, and all conflicting parties must not only satisfy their own needs but also the needs of other parties as well (Meredith & Mantel, 161)
