Water Resource Challenges

Review Ch. 10 and 11 of your text, then complete the following:

Provide at least three freshwater and three ocean water resource challenges by filling in the following table. Then, respond to the question that follows:

Freshwater Resource Challenge | Description |

Sewage | Waste water from drains or sewer |

Organic Compounds | Landfills industrial wastes contaminated ground and surface water |

Diseased agents | Infected individuals spread infectious diseases |

Ocean Water Resource Challenge | Description |

Point Source Pollution | Water dumped in ocean without being treated |

Non-Point Source Pollution | Pesticides, fertilizers, and livestock waste |

Coastal Development | Destroys important coastal habitats like salt marshes and mangrove habitats |

In 200 to 300 words, respond to the following: Choose one fresh or ocean water resource challenge and describe in detail why the issue has become a problem and how human activities have contributed to the problem.

I think that one of the most widely known problems with ocean water is pollution caused by humans. For years humans have been dumping harmful substances in the ocean, and it has caused a lot of damage to marine life and the oceans ecosystems. Not only has it caused problems for ocean dwellers, but also to humans because there is a chance of consuming contaminated seafood.

Oil spills are also a major issue because I remember growing up seeing pictures of birds and seals etc. covered in oil. It is sad to see how much damage we as humans are doing, and I find it absolutely ignorant that people thought that dumping sewage and other garbage into the ocean would not have any adverse affects. I believe that it was more an issue of laziness and convenience. The government finally stepped in and created laws to prevent.
