English Assignment: Macbeth (Lady Macbeth)

Interviewer: Good morning/Afternoon ladies and gentlemen. We are here with the director of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Today we explore the way that Shakespeare invites readers to take up positions in relation to concepts, characters and their relationships. Will you give us a brief explanation of the play “Macbeth”?

Director: Macbeth starts with two Scottish generals, Macbeth and Banquo. Three witches foretell that Macbeth shall be king of Scotland and Banquo the father of many kings. Lady Macbeth encouragement persuades Macbeth to kill Duncan, the king of Scotland. For the second time Macbeth sees the witches, who warns him about the noble Macduff. They foretell his ruling won’t stop by none born of woman can harm him and no one can defeat him until the forest seems to move. The king realise his position is desperate, even when he find that the witches’ words deceive him. The forest does seem to move and he is killed in hand-to-hand fighting Macduff who says that he was not “born of woman”. Malcolm becomes king of Scotland.

Interviewer: Some critics have stated that Shakespeare has positioned the audience to see Lady Macbeth as an ambitious evil manipulator. Others have suggested that she has been created as a misunderstood wife, drawn into criminal activity by her love for and loyalty to her husband. What are your views?

Director: Well this statement can be argued either way and there will never be a right answer, due to both sides having their own opinion. My views are she is an evil manipulator.

Interviewer: Why do you view Lady Macbeth as an evil manipulator?

Director: At the start of the play Lady Macbeth encourages Macbeth to kill the king. She only thought of her ruling and the power she will have being the Queen.
