Whale Sharks and Tourism

Rhicondon typus. Gentle giant. Those are some of the the common jargons scientists describe on this sea creature. The whale shark –or butanding/tuki in the Philippines – is a well-known largest tropical fish that lurks around during December to Febuary in the eastern coasts in the Philippines, trying to find plankton. Discovered by a military doctor Andrew Smith, the name itself is well known due to its detailed physiology of large body mass, fins resembling to that of a shark, and a very large mouth with harmless teeth. And since it’s almost toothless, it tends to filterfeed on plankton and other organic sea microorganisms. Its fascinating antics in earlier times has made humans curious to it and the name of being a “gentle giant” was given to it because it does not even hurta human being. Instead, if divers spproach into this creature, it gets away like they’re shy. Its course of migration is likely to be within the equator line, and it migrates depending on the temperature or season.

The presence of whale sharks in the Philippines has caused positive outlooks when it comes to tourism. Not only the creatures are fascinating to see: they are actually fun at to look in a close-up, scuba diving matter. They seemed to be well-behaved and nervous at the same time when divers approach them. And their presence also regulates the plankton/microorganism count that is essential in maintaining several microbes in the sea in a considerable tolerant level. Seeing them is like being hovered by a mystical being. However…

Nowadays, the whale sharks seems to be tamed, and then being fed by fishermen in Donsol, Sorsogon. This seemed unlikely, because the expected behavior of the tuki was supposed to be rolling in the deep and looking for plankton, for in the bottom of the ocean there thrives s schools of plankton. The plankton may be decreasing and/or in crisis because...
