Personal Responsibility

Personal responsibility is the ability of a person to become accountable for his or her own actions. The relationship between personal responsibility and college success is parallel in nature consisting of the ability to maintain self-discipline, making prudent decision and positive support structure of others

Personal Responsibility

Personal responsibility is the ability of a person to become accountable for his or her own actions. The relationship between personal responsibility and education is parallel in nature consisting of the ability to maintain self-discipline, making prudent decisions, and positive support structure of others. Self-advocacy refers to an individual’s ability to communicate effectively his or her own interests and desires.  It involves making informed decisions and taking responsibility for those decisions.  It implies that one realizes their strengths, weaknesses, goals and interests and not to allow others to sway them. 

As an adult, a person is responsible for his or her own actions. A person’s actions are shaped by their beliefs, their lifestyle, and the way a person is brought up by his or her parents. Skills such as time management and self-discipline are learned during all stages of development and become a necessity as an adult. “All children need to learn that the choices they make have consequences. This provides them the most powerful feedback about their judgement.” (Safranski, 1997, Offer Choices) These skills allow a person to avoid procrastination, increase the quality of their work, and reduce stress, especially during a college career.
