A crisis can be defined as a situation that a person can be faced with that is unable to solve it or that exceeds an individual’s available resources and coping mechanisms. In some crisis people are faced with situations that they aren’t able to use their everyday coping strategies to solve. These issues that are unresolvable can cause a person to be faced with anxiety attacks, an increase of tension, a subsequent state of emotional unrest and the inability to function properly for long periods of time. The Chinese interventions thus provides opportunities for clients to learn new coping skills while identifying, mobilizing and enhancing those they already possess. Characteristics of crisis events can include things like: events that can be perceived as threatening, events that hinder the ability to modify or reduce the impact of stressful events, there can be an increase sense of fear, tension and confusion and increase of high level of subjective discomfort. When it comes to counseling someone in a crisis, the six-step model can come into play. The training in the use of the standardized model for intervening in crisis situations can help the counselor to be aware of the elements of the effective response to crisis. The six-step model for crisis may be one aspect that can be implemented by facilities for them to use as their guide.

The model focuses on listening, interpreting and responding in a systematic manner to help the person return to their pre-crisis state of mind to the best extent possible. An extra emphasis is placed on the listening and assessment throughput each step.
