7 C’s of effective communication in Barack Obama’s victory speech of 2012.

A person is said to be an effective communicator, if he can retain the interest of the public and contains all the 7 C’s of communication. The 7 C’s include completeness, conciseness, consideration, clarity, concreteness, courtesy, and correctness.

One of the best speeches of recent times is the victory speech of Barack Obama, when he was re-elected as the President of the United States in 2012. If we analyse the speech we see that it contained all the 7 C’s of communication. This is a major reason for the success of this speech and to have a huge fan following.

The speech given was complete. It had all the information, the future roles that he dreamt of, thank all the people involved, everything. It successfully conveys the entire message to the common public and that too taking into consideration the mind set of people.

The speech was very concise. There was no repetition involved and the message was passed to the masses in the least number of words needed. This was a major factor that the crowd was enthusiastic from the start till the end and was paying attention to whatever he had to say. Had there been a lot of repetition or the speech would have been too long, the people would have never given such welcome cheers.

The speech was very considerate. It considered the feelings of people as if Obama “had stepped into their shoes” before delivering the speech. There was a very strong “you” connect in his speech. He used the word “you” more than he used the word “I”. Also in every statement he tried to connect the audience with himself or with the United States. This led the audience to exhibit the desirable interest and also stimulate positive response from the audience. This also showed optimism of Obama towards the common public.
