CLCV 2300A – Introduction to Archaeology Map Room Research Assignment

Due: Wednesday 14 November, 2012

There is a display of maps and archaeological atlases in the Map Room [MADGIC] in the basement of the Library. Look for the signpost with my name and the course codes CLCV 2300 and FYSM 1106. You will find atlases and some maps on the map cabinet and more maps and plans on the wall adjacent to it. Your assignment will be based on these resources. Choose one archaeological site from whatever part of the world you are interested in and, in 3 [max.] double-spaced pages, provide the information requested. Please follow the order of Parts 1 to 9 with a paragraph for each one. The number of points given for each part is added in brackets.

1. Name of the site and geographical location [Where in the world is it…?] [2]

2. What type of site is it? eg. settlement, burial, fort, garbage dump [2]

3. Give a physical description of the site, eg. desert site, bog, urban location [3]

4. Give information about the excavation(s) of this site. Who was the individual/team/university that worked on it? When? Are excavations ongoing? [3]

5. What is the current state of this site? eg. Is it abandoned, conserved, a UNESCO site? [3]

6. What is the civilization or people associated with this site? eg. Mayan, Anglo-Saxon, Greek, Viking [3]

7. What are some of the significant structures, artifacts, or discoveries associated with this site? [8]

8. What is the significance of the site today, whether archaeologically, politically or historically? [4]
