Sports Marketing and Management

In today’s economy it is not easy to find a secure job with a demand for and need for hiring. It is hard to find a consistency in the mainstream. Nonetheless, sports are always consistent. Sports have been around for hundreds of years. Competition drives an athlete as competition drives an industry in the business world. When the two collide, there is competitive nature like none other.

According to Wikipedia (2010), sports marketing was first derived with America’s favorite past-time, baseball. This happened when the first professional baseball game ever was on national television on August 26, 1939. This caused Babe Ruth to make over six figure contracts. He was the first athlete to ever do this. This was a phenomenon in that era. Most sports advertising picked up interest between the sports of golf and tennis. Dating back to the early 70’s, sponsorship in the direction of tennis events and professional golf tournament were what first started what we know today as sports marketing. Sports marketing uses promotion, advertising, sponsorship, promotions, and relations of the public and forms them into the most reliant efforts to get the attention of the consumers.

Education is this field is not as important as experience, although education is required. Employers typically want someone with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and/or any business major. Most marketing or advertising jobs are mainly filled by staff inside the organization that is experienced and knowledgeable about the firm. With experience comes promotions, and with promotions come more money. In sports and marketing, there is lots of money being dealt for many different needs. Sports marketing managers can expect to make approximately $67,000 annually in the state of Mississippi.
