Abstract
Substance abuse is a tremendous strain on families today. Efforts to understand a successful recovery are needed. The necessity in a recovery program is the importance of spirituality. Powers greater than one self either influence or do not influence lives and destinies. The results clearly indicate the existence of spiritual need and ignored increases the probability of a person relapsing. Some investigators indicate that participants who embrace some spirituality in the recovery process have greater success and maintain sobriety. Understanding the nature of human development is a complex task and when religious and spiritual variables and understanding are added, a recovery program can and will be a success.
