ABSTRACT

Surface acoustic waves are the acoustic waves which are used in the electronic device components. Now a days, these acoustic waves are playing a versatile role in a various range of sensor fields such as in physical sensing, chemical sensing and bio sensing. The working requires upon so many characteristics like materials, the acoustic wave properties, design of device and the sensing mechanisms which are involved for a wide range of applications. In this paper, will be going to discuss about the surface acoustic waves devices their working, design techniques, significance, properties, fabrication processes and implementation of these waves in the sensor applications. In the present technological world there is an interesting development of types of waves available for sensor applications. These sensors are published by the Rayleigh waves, lamb waves, love waves acoustic plate modes and finally surface transverse waves (STW). Each of these waves types have their own significance, specialties, advantages and disadvantages with respect to their parameters like sensitivity, stability, complexity of fabrication and usability. Different planar technologies are used for fabrication of the acoustic-wave devices and these things will be discussed in the paper.

DEFINITION

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) is an acoustic wave traveling along the surface of a material exhibiting elasticity, with an  amplitude that typically decays exponentially with depth into the substrate [1].

INTRODUCTION

Surface acoustic waves (SAW) was introduced by Lord Rayleigh in 1885 and he described the surface acoustic mode of propagation and explained its behavior and properties in his research study [2]. Surface acoustic waves are needed to develop the sensor systems which are capable to perform the measurements at a molecular level to measure accurately....
