Happy Marriages Depend on Communication

This article was kind of intense. As I was reading it all I could think about was my relationship with my boyfriend, well newly my fiancé. We recently just got engaged to be married but we have been together for six years and we have two children together. Everyone keeps telling me that it all changes when you get married though so I’m a little nervous about it. This article really made me think about the way my fiancé and I communicate now. I do feel that communication is important in a relationship and without communication relationships don’t grow. This article kind of confirms that because without learning something new about each other every now and then, things tend to plateau and potentially fade away. Without growth in a relationship there really is no happiness and long term.

I can relate to this self-disclosure concept from this article. It is definitely something I need to work on though because I have never been a really open person. I have been really trying to work on this though because I love my fiancé and I want to share everything with him. He isn’t much better at it though, it’s like we really have to pry information out of each other. It’s like going on a road trip with the kids, “are we there yet?” over and over, only it’s with trying to pull feelings and information out of each other on personal topics. I’m going to make him read this article though and maybe it’ll be easier for us.

Self-disclosure is really important I think. I mean if you are going to be sharing your life with this person and you care about them enough to marry them in the first place you have to know that their family, friends, and past come with that. There is always baggage that follows as my dad would tell me. Not being able to talk about that baggage is going to put a damper on things though, I mean if I have to deal with this situation or tension from...
