Three out of four full-time American employees encounter unethical or questionable behavior in their workplace (LRN, 2007). It is imperative to incorporate policies and procedures that employees and management staff follow that are in alignment with the organizations missions, goals and values. The following reading will outline how ethics and management characteristics influence organizational leadership.

Let first start out by defining what ethics is. Refers to the principles people use to distinguish what is morally right, “also known as moral philosophy, a branch of thought that addresses questions about morality and deals with concepts such as right and wrong” (Baack, 2012). Ethics are all about making the choice that is going to benefit as many people as possible in a fair manner. It is not what is likely to benefit you or feels good at a particular time but what will have you stand in the right place today, tomorrow and forever. And a lot of times managers and employees forget to incorporate these values in their daily practice.

As a member of the management team and representative of the organization a person have to remember to choose the values and the ethics that are most important to you both reflecting who you personally and professionally. Strengths that are valuable to a good organizational structure include being a good communicator, listener, and set and execute goals that are aligning with the organizations mission, values and goals. Living your values is one of the most powerful tools to help management lead and influence others within the organization.
