LDRSHIP is an acronym that simplifies all that an Army soldier stands for. LDRSHIP is short for Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. You have to have loyalty to your job, duty to see it though. Respect fellow soldiers, selfless service leads to organizational teamwork. Honor is to live up to all the Army values. Integrity to do what is right, legally and morally. An last but not least personal courage to be able to face fear and to have both physical and moral courage.

You don’t have to look hard to see the connection between each of the seven Army Values. It is a system that is intertwined within itself. If you don’t have Personal Courage, it is difficult to have a sense of Duty. Integrity is seemingly pointless without Honor. A man who doesn’t respect his superior would have a problem being loyal to that same person.

Each of these is a value that not only stands alone but ties into the next. It is a chain that, if missing one link, will not hold. This in turns ties into the Chain of Command.

If you don’t notify your Chain of Command of where you’re at or what you’re doing, they cannot keep accountability of you. Accountability is key in the Army. Let’s say you’re missing a fellow soldier, you have a duty to report to your chain of command of the missing soldier. So you just incorporated the army values, Chain of Command, an accountability all into doing what is right.

The chain of command is in place to allow people to receive orders and execute them. It also plays heavily into the morale of a unit, and the troop welfare. The Chain of Command is vital. You work for someone. That person is responsible for everything you do and everything you fail to do. You receive your orders from that person. Span of control.
